2016 : June Newsletter

Welcome to Cynthia Shaver Asian Art Appraiser Newsletter June 2016,

May was partly consumed by the California State Warriors basketball team, appraiser to appraiser meetings, updating my website, consulting on a wonderful group of North Vietnamese garments, inspection of a 20th century Chinese sculpture and organizing my office.

Also attended a symposium on Korean Mother-of-Pearl lacquerware at the Asian Art Museum. It compliments the stunning exhibition of Korean lacquerware at the museum http://www.asianart.org/exhibitions/korean-lacquerware. Be sure to utilize the interactive materials available in the exhibit and at the museum. I made a small lacquer mother-of-pearl pin that adorns my desk during a demonstration with emphasis on hands-on. Demonstration: first lacquer the small piece of wood, then apply the small slivers of mother-of-pearl with tweezers, making intricate floral shapes, a vine with leaves, applying layers of lacquer, waiting to dry in between, too much for my patience! Once again, humbled by the art I appraise.

Went to https://deyoung.famsf.org/exhibitions/kay-sekimachi-student-teacher-artist, a fabulous exhibit of fiber artist Kay Sekimachi not to be missed. Worth going several times. Look at the braiding on the necklaces. Check out the drawers and the drawings of different weaves structures. One of my favorite pieces is “Eyelash” with beige metallic thread and linen done in 1958. Reminds me of a zen priest robe, appearing so simple yet so complex and powerful.
